Cauber Madonna

The "Cauber Madonna", created around 1420 by an unknown Rhenish master, is one of the most important works of this period.

She is 135 cm high, carved from linden wood and set. The color of the robe is white with golden borders and hem. The mantle lining is kept in azure-hit color, crown wreath and base are vermilion.

The Madonna figure was most likely removed from the Kauber parish church after the introduction of the Reformation in the Electoral Palatinate, i.e. around 1560. After the 1st World War it reappeared in Frankfurt am Main. The Hessian State Museum in Kassel purchased the Madonna from the Frankfurt art dealer Zerner in 1924. Since that time it has been exhibited in the showrooms of the Landesmuseum.

Therefore, in Kaub you can only admire her replica.

Various efforts to bring the statue back to Kaub have failed.

The Hessian Ministry of Science and Art informed the Heimat- und Kulturverein that a sale of the Madonna cannot be considered. It is a central and indispensable exhibit of the collection of medieval sculpture in the Hessian State Museum Kassel. Thus, the local history and culture association has suggested to have a replica of the Madonna created. A considerable sum of money from the association's assets was made available for this purpose. Numerous donations made it possible to win a well-known artist for this project. This is the sculptor Wieland Graf from Eichstätt.

It was agreed with Mr. Graf and Prof. Dr. Schmidberger, the section head of the Hessisches Landesmuseum in Kassel, that the Madonna figure could be made in the museum. This was done with the help of a special point-measuring procedure, whereby a hundred percent faithful copy of the "Cauber Madonna" was created. Only the crown, which was lost from the original, was reconstructed and added.

The Kassel museum conservator, Mr. Winfried Schurm, was kind enough to undertake the restoration of the Madonna. Thus all preconditions were fulfilled to obtain an optimal replica of the "Cauber Madonna".

During a solemn thanksgiving service on October 24, 1998, the Madonna figure was handed over to the Catholic parish of Kaub and blessed by Father Königstein. This newly created, probably not insignificant work of art has now found a worthy place in the Catholic Parish Church of St. Nicholas in Kaub.
